Mark
Spiekerman Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund is to be used to provide an award to recognize a member
of the 21 Club who is selected the Sportsman of the Year. The player
who receives this award may not be the player who shoots the lowest
scores, but will be the player that knows and abides by the rules
and practices the game¹s etiquette. It will go to the player
who is courteous and thoughtful, a true sportsman.
Mark Spiekerman
was a member of the 21 Club in the late 60s and early 70s. Mark
died in an automobile accident in Florida in 1981. Mark was always
a gentleman on the golf course and was a strong believer in sportsmanship
in all sports, but especially golf, since that was his sport.
When Mark was
killed, he was an Assistant Pro at Kendale Lakes Golf & Country
Club in Miami. He was actively involved in working with junior golfers,
which he enjoyed greatly. His family asked for memorials to be made
to junior golf programs. Close to $1,000 was received from family
and friends in Mid-Michigan and Miami. His mother and stepfather
thought some kind of award for the 21 Club would be nice. Starting
in 1982, the 21 Club began providing a scholarship in the amount
of $75.00 to the player selected as Sportsman of the Year.
Garb-Ko, Inc.,
whose corporate headquarters is in Mid-Michigan, has sponsored the 21 Club and Mark Spiekerman Memorial Scholarship Fund since 1995.
Garb-Ko, Inc. operates 7-Eleven Food Stores in Michigan, Indiana
and Ohio. Larry Hauck, Director of Marketing for Garb-Ko, Inc.,
states, "Garb-Ko is proud to support the 21 Club and enjoys
being part of the exciting junior golf program in Saginaw County."
Garb-Ko helps to underwrite the cost associated with operating a
junior golf program of this scope and donates additional monies
to the Mark Spiekerman Memorial Fund on an annual basis. The additional
money will be used to provide three scholarships to the 21 Club
participants.
